Report for Bindii meeting, June 27 2021

Present: Lynette Arden, Stella Damarjati, Steve Wigg, Julia Wakefield. Apologies: Maeve Archibald.

Steve gave a short presentation, preceded by a description of the online tea ceremony that he experienced. He related how there are winter solstice ceremonies in Japan that are designed to appeal to all the senses, and this example included an ikebana arrangement, sound stimuli such as the ‘deer scarer’ fountain, a scroll with the inscription ‘Direct (the) mind in this place’ and a charcoal burning, using a log of a special type of Japanese wood that creates a glowing star. It was at such ceremonies as these that renku were traditionally written. Steve’s online ceremony did not include poets, but we liked the possibility of uniting an international online ceremony with a renku in the future.

Illawong Winter Meeting 2021

Illawong Haiku Group held their Winter meeting on Tuesday 15th June at the home of member Ros Pitt. While the weather was quite dreary outside it did not match the warm and congenial mood inside. It was lovely to welcome Rita back who we now consider a valuable member of our small but very enthusiastic group. We discussed the use of Imagery in Haiku based on a recent presentation by Joshua Gage featured on The Haiku Foundation website. Our Spring meeting will be a ginko when we will observe and gather inspiration to write haiku to each of the five types of imagery: Visual, Auditory, Tactile, Olfactory and Gustatory.

L to R: Rita Potente, Ros Pitt and Alison Miller

Windfall: Australian Haiku Issue 9, 2021 – Review

Review by Simon Hanson

How fortunate we are to have a journal like Windfall: Australian Haiku, showcasing as it does, the best of Australian haiku— bringing together familiar and new voices (and the new voices are exciting). This issue, like those before it celebrates many and varied aspects of Australian life in its country, coastal, urban and domestic settings accompanied by a host of perceptive observations around season, landform, flora and fauna and the lives of people.
