Portarlington Haiku Society Winter Gathering

July 24 2023

With half of our group holidaying up north to escape the Victorian winter, our gathering was rather small this time round. Four of us donned jackets and scarves and enjoyed a beach walk close to home before gathering around a table in a cafe for coffee, chat and later, lunch.

Our talk focussed on information we gathered previously after liaising with Ferris Gilli and Michael Dylan Welch, both having been very generous with their time and support. We discussed juxtaposition and pivot lines, and stated and implied kigo within a number of examples, and looked at how some of our own haiku could be improved by utilising these tools further.

We discussed the recent collaboration between ourselves and three other haiku groups, and are all looking forward to the up-and-coming kukai with them.

Our group turns two in October so ideas were floated regarding a haiku celebration as well as ways we can ‘haiku-bomb’ our small town sometime later in the year.

Our regular newsletter (two per month) keeps everyone informed of events and also bonds us all through our own kukai, with all ten members contributing and voting, no matter where in the world they happen to be.
