Illawong Haiku Group Autumn Meeting, 4 March 2025

Illawong Haiku Group

Five poets gathered at Alison Miller’s home in Revesby. Present were Alison Miller, Rita Potente, Patricia Meredith, Kathleen Ann and Margaret Mahony. Carol Reynolds, Ros Pitt and a future new member Enza Russo were unable to attend.

The meeting began with morning tea and Alison’s daughter Leah joined us. She is also a writer but not of haiku.

There was much to catch up on and we started with reading three of our recently written haiku, including those received from Carol and Ros. Plenty of discussion ensued and we delighted in supporting each other.

Taking a break, we explored Alison and her husband’s amazing garden, which includes a variety of cacti, flowering plants, trees, blueberries in pots, a spectacular Crepe Myrtle and the list goes on.

We jotted down some ideas and offered more haiku. It was then time for lunch and we read haiku from the bowl, some from poets we admire and some of our own.

Alison talked about concrete imagery — imagery which is specific or particular and appeals to the senses. It was a fun day and we left inspired to continue our love of haiku.
