Cloudcatchers’ Winter Ginko (No. 70)

As this was the seventieth ginko of the Cloudcatchers, we met at the location where John Bird gathered a few poets together to form the group in December 2005. Since then we have assembled once a season at various locations in our vicinity, except for those Covid months, when virtual ginko were undertaken in our own homes or surroundings, on the same day, at the same time, followed by a Round Robin discussion of each others’ haiku written during the one hour silence.

Haiku @ The Oaks

This time, we were a full house.   After a mid-winter break during July, we re-assembled at The Oaks for lunch, doubly pleased to greet teach other once more—all of us, Glenys Ferguson, Hazel Hall, Kathy Kituai, Marietta McGregor, Gregory Piko, and Jan Dobb.  As usual, it was not long before our personal catch-up was morphing into animated haiku talk.  How good to be together again!

Recent awards for Australian Haiku Poets

There have been a few international competition results come out recently in which Australians have fared well. Lyn Reeves was one of the winners of this year’s Haiku Calendar Competition, and Mark Miller, together with Lyn, was among the runners-up.  Mark Miller took out second prize in the 26th Mainichi Haiku Contest, in which Rob Scott also received an honorable mention. Well done Lyn, Mark and Rob!

Australian haiku poets also did well in the recently announced Haiku section results of the New Zealand Poetry Society International Competition. Gavin Austin and Owen Bullock each received ‘Highly commended’, while five poets were ‘Commended’ for their entries: Jan Dobb, Simon Hanson, Ron Moss, Lyn Reeves, Cynthia Rowe. Congratulations to all these fine poets!

Portarlington Haiku Society Winter Gathering

With half of our group holidaying up north to escape the Victorian winter, our gathering was rather small this time round. Four of us donned jackets and scarves and enjoyed a beach walk close to home before gathering around a table in a cafe for coffee, chat and later, lunch.
