HAIKU @ THE OAKS, CANBERRA

Tuesday 24 October 2017

By 1:30 we were all gathered at The Oaks, greetings ringing loud and warm under the spreading trees.

Seven of us circled the large wooden table, while a hopeful magpie or two kept watch. The six ‘regulars’ – Kathy Kituai, Glenys Ferguson, Hazel Hall, Gregory Piko, Marietta McGregor and Jan Dobb – were delighted to welcome back our ‘ex-officio’ member Sheila Sondik from Washington State who is again visiting her family in Canberra. Haiku @ The Oaks, Canberra

Tuesday 22 August 2017

Sunlit pink blossoms along the lane through Weston Park welcomed us to another haiku buzz at The Oaks Brasserie. After Canberra’s bitter winter, it was a joy to sit around an outside table and to feel the warmth at last, while miners and currawongs squabbled in branches overhead. Despite a residue of snow on the hills, spring is surely awakening once more. Continue reading “Haiku @ The Oaks, Canberra”

Haiku @ The Oaks, Canberra

Tuesday 16 May 2017

Canberra’s autumn this year is more stunning than ever, an ideal time for a gathering of haiku spirits at The Oaks. The five of us — Kathy Kituai, Gregory Piko, Glenys Ferguson, Marietta McGregor and Jan Dobb — were very pleased to welcome Hazel Hall to our table under the golden trees. Currawongs moved about in the branches overhead (beware of missiles!) and leaves gently drifted in afternoon light.

Haiku @ The Oaks, Canberra

Tuesday 28 February, 2017

Our group met again, under the spreading branches at The Oaks in Yarralumla, to enjoy coffee, conversation and each other’s company.

There was appreciation of Marietta McGregor’s wonderful haiku that have featured all month on the Mann Library’s Daily Haiku website, talk of the little things in life and how well they were captured by Issa, there was mention of wabi, reference to sabi and even some talk about topics that didn’t have to do with poetry at all (though they may have inspired a new poem or two). Gathering of Haiku @ The Oaks, Canberra on Monday 5 December 2016

A warm morning to match the warmth of our keenness as we all gathered at the Botanic Gardens.  Our usual venue of The Oaks Brassiere is closed on Mondays – but this was the day Beverley George was in town!  We were delighted to welcome her to our table – Gregory Piko, Kathy Kituai, Glenys Ferguson, Marietta McGregor and Jan Dobb.  A whisper had reached us that it was Beverley’s birthday so our morning took off with cake, candle and song.

Gathering of Haiku @ The Oaks, Canberra, on Monday 19 September 2016

Morning drizzle and mists gave way to blue sky and sunshine as six of us met around an outside table with our coffee, tea, a tempting cake or two, and assorted bits of haiku and tanka.  A persistent wattle bird tried to join our gathering — for gourmet reasons rather than poetic — before heading to test his luck elsewhere.  Duck parents shepherded their lone baby duckling on the wet green lawns.
