stringing tomatoes –
midsummer’s fruit
hangs on to midwinter

           

magnolia blooms …
three generations of
a family tree

                                                                 

writer’s retreat
clock chimes
each quarter hour

 

wild fennel
mother’s olive jar
overflows

Paperbark Haiku Ginko WA

It has been a hot summer here in Perth, the heat unrelenting and so many days over 40C+!  Needless to say, our meeting destined for the Harold Boas Gardens was cancelled because of the forecast. We had been looking forward to the walk, viewing the gardens, experiencing the waterfalls in the brochures; the gardens perched right on the city’s edge.  We thought we could beat the heat, keep to canopied areas, and grapple with moving shade: we can do this, we said! But no, the heat unbearable and the event cancelled.

On a glorious winter’s day, 5th August, 2020, in Perth, Western Australia, I contemplated the healing power of the sun as it entered my study windows through thin vertical blinds.  Outside, the succulents were busy showing off their light and shade, their colour and variation; inside, I was preparing for the two hour Paperbark Haiku Zoom Winter Ginko gathering.

Paperbark haiku: Last days of summer

Wednesday 12th February 2020

Such a pretty place – Guildford, WA is an important town in the Swan Valley with so much history. I was lucky to have grown up in the area and that makes a difference to how you see a place and its relevance to writing haiku because you know its background, its heritage, and its heritage become yours.
