The 2020 AFL Grand Final Haiku Kukai

Calling haiku poets (and non-haiku poets) all over the world to participate in the 2020 AFL Grand Final Haiku Kukai.

It’s that time of year again, folks.

grand final day—
the stadium fills
with hope

The Covid pandemic has turned the world upside down. And there is no better example of that than this year’s AFL Grand Final being played in Brisbane while the MCG remains a silent cauldron. It’ll be one for the history books and something that none of us will ever forget.

One thing that hasn’t changed, however, is this year’s running of the annual Grand Final Haiku Kukai! Yes, it’s back! Haiku poets and non-haiku poets alike from all corners of the globe are invited to tune into the big game and produce the only live haiku call of a major sports event anywhere in the world! (that we’re aware of).

This year will be the 9th time this event has been staged. Last year, the kukai produced a memorable call of a very unmemorable game when the Tigers obliterated the Giants. You can read the highlights of that call here – ‘Nursing six-packs to their chests’. This will give you a feel for how we roll. As far as rules are concerned, all styles of haiku are fair game (5-7-5 if you must!).

As in previous years, this is primarily a Facebook event – and you can join here. But if you are not on Facebook, please feel free to add your haiku to the comments below. Game starts 6.30pm (AEST) Saturday 24th October, but you are welcome to send haiku throughout the week in the build up to the game.

Thanks to Covid, many of us will be watching from home, but wherever you are, whatever you’re doing, whoever you barrack for, even if you hate footy, send us some haiku of your experience of the day. This is a most unique grand final experience.

See you at the game!
Haiku Bob (aka Rob Scott)
