Cloudcatchers’ Spring Ginko was held at Victoria Park, Dalwood NSW (near Alstonville). This was the group’s tenth visit to this magical location on the far north coast. It is a remnant of sub-tropical jungle, part of the Big Scrub, and once home of the Widjabul people of the Bundjalung nation. Here there is a vast array of forest flora and a great variety of insect and birdlife. Some of us did hear a distant thud-thud of a pademelon, but none were sighted. We viewed a giant scrub turkey nest extending over the boardwalk, and spied a yellow robin and its nest, believed to be an indicator of a healthy forest environment.

Continue reading “Catchment – Poetry of Place : third edition”Ten haiku poets gathered on the morning of 21st October at the Palace Garden Gate of Sydney’s Royal Botanic Garden. A passing light shower fell on a few of us while we waited for others to arrive, but the changeable weather didn’t prevent us from each strolling in the garden on our individual ginko. We re-convened in the Rose Garden pavilion to share some of our draft poems, where a curious sacred ibis joined us momentarily. Poems reflected the many exotic plants blooming at this time of the year and the insects visiting them, as well as other kinds of moments.

The Spring ginko, organised by Paperbark Haiku, was held on 15th October 2024, with a return visit to the Botanic Gardens at Kings Park in Perth. It was a glorious day, the weather sunny and warm, the views over Perth waters and the high rise of the city making a spectacular backdrop. It was a perfect setting for discussing and writing haiku. The Spring flowers, the towering trees and the memorials of Remembrance all gave the poets plenty of opportunity for inspiration.
