Successful haiku workshop for youth and book-fair in Sydney

Sydney based, Sri Lankan born haiku poet, Subhashini Jayatilake hosted a haiku workshop for youth on June 29th, 2025, at Denis Johnson Library, Stanhope Gardens, NSW, Australia.

The workshop was a huge success, with attendees of all ages, including children from 12 years and above. Leanne Mumford, President of the Australian Haiku Society, and Subhashini Jayatilake co-facilitated the workshop, which was well-received by all. Everyone enthusiastically wrote haiku, and some were amazed by the simplicity and beauty of this form of art.

After the workshop,  attendees had the opportunity to buy books on sale at the book-fair, which was arranged in the same room where the workshop was held. Attendees were delighted to discover Sri Lankan bilingual and trilingual haiku books and Australian Anthologies on sale.

Light refreshments were provided to all attendees and guests.

Vanessa Proctor, former President of the Australian Haiku Society (2016-2020), attended and graced the occasion.

The event was supported by the Blacktown City Council, Sri Lankan Australian Women’s Network and Amoda Designs.

The workshop brought together haiku enthusiasts from Sri Lanka, India, Nepal, and Australia, making it a truly multicultural celebration of haiku poetry.
