Report on Ginko With Lysenko #30, Summer in the Park

The weather was hot and humid, the grass was blonde (which was how one of the poets described it) and the river was low. There were fewer people in the park than I’d thought there would be. But still, five poets and a photographer gathered at a café deep in the middle of the park to engage in haiku activities and discussions. Cloudcatchers Ginko No. 44 (summer)

Skate Park, Ballina NSW    Thursday 2 February 2016 

After recent ginko at a coastal lake, an inland creek, and a pocket of rainforest, a return to the ocean seemed appropriate for the Cloudcatchers’ summer ginko. A summer gathering it was indeed, with a temperature of 37ºC in the shade.

The heat featured in many first drafts, but a gentle sea breeze did soften the intensity of our discomfort. The venue was the Skate Park in Ballina, where North Creek empties into the Richmond River, in sight of the river mouth. Continue reading “Cloudcatchers Ginko No. 44 (summer)”

‘Eucalypt’ Anthology Book Launch

An anthology of 108 tanka from the first twenty-one issues of Eucalypt: a tanka journal will be launched at The Children’s Bookshop, 6 Hannah Street, Beecroft, NSW, between 10.30 a.m. and 12.00 midday, on Saturday, 18 February.

Edited by the journal’s founding editor, Beverley George, the anthology is entitled A Temple Bell Sounds.

It will be launched by Kiyoko Ogawa (poet, editor and essayist from Otsu, Japan).

The launch will feature readings from poets whose work is included in A Temple Bell Sounds and/or in Eucalypt 21, co-edited by Beverley George and Julie Thorndyke.

New Secretary for the Australian Haiku Society

We would like to extend a very warm welcome to Simon Hanson as the new Secretary of the Australian Haiku Society.  Simon will take over the Secretary position from around the beginning of March, after a handover period.

I would like to thank Rodney Williams, our outgoing Secretary, for his tireless work for the AHS over the past two and a half years.  He has added greatly to the Society with his enthusiasm and passion for haiku.
