(In)visible Libraries event in Melbourne 30/11 – 02/12/2023

Performance artist and Fellow of the State Library of Victoria, Leisa Shelton, is working on a project for an exhibition ‘(In)visible Libraries’ that includes small hand-made books of haiku from Under the Same Moon alongside their translation into Braille. The first of these features urban haiku. Poets whose work has been selected are Olivia Ark, Gavin Austin, Dawn Bruce, Jane Gibian, Louise Hopewell, Jayashri Maniyil, Maurice Nevile and Lyn Reeves.  There is a readers’ corner where people can access these books. The 2022 AFL Grand Final Haiku Kukai

with hope

Welcome to the annual celebration of Australian footy and haiku!

Calling all haiku poets and other vagabonds from every nook and cranny on the planet to participate in the Annual AFL Grand Final Haiku Kukai for 2022. This is the one day of the year when haiku poets, expert and novice, turn their Zen minds to the rip-roaring, white-knuckle, roller-coaster experience of a footy match to produce a live haiku call of the AFL Grand Final. The game kicks off on Saturday 24th September at 2.30pm AEST, but you can share your haiku anytime prior to the game.

Drifting Sands: Aussie Style

The US based online journal, Drifting Sands, has had a particularly Aussie flavour lately with the January Special Feature: Girt by Sea overseen and including the works of poet-photographer Gavin Austin. This collection features pieces by a number of Australian poets. Some of the photographs may take a little while to load because of their high resolution, but they are worth it!

Also the current issue of Drifting Sands: issue 7, with a more international selection, has been guest edited by Marilyn Humbert and can be enjoyed here.

Melbourne Writer’s Festival

The Australian Haiku Society (AHS) was invited to take part in The Melbourne Writer’s Festival this year. As a Victorian representative, I was contacted by Janel Yau, project manager at the Melbourne Immigration Museum who asked if we would be able to assist people write haiku and run an open stage reading featuring their work.

AHS Haiku Readings and Ginko at the Sydney Cherry Blossom Festival, 22nd August

A group of poets, led by Vanessa Proctor, AHS President, will be reading haiku at the Sydney Cherry Blossom Festival at the Auburn Botanic Gardens on Thursday 22nd August at 11am. The reading will take place in the rain forest area and will be followed by a ginko and the opportunity to write haiku. All are welcome to attend this event which is free for seniors, children and those who live in the Cumberland Council region. Writing Haiku – workshop this weekend!

MyronAs part of the Melbourne Spoken Word Festival, Myron Lysenko will be leading a haiku workshop on Sunday 14th July.

Myron has been teaching contemporary haiku since the end of the twentieth century. He will show examples of haiku and will teach you how to compose haiku and how to use specific techniques to achieve this. If you are in Melbourne this weekend take the opportunity to learn more about the art and craft of contemporary haiku.
