The Spring ginko, organised by Paperbark Haiku, was held on 15th October 2024, with a return visit to the Botanic Gardens at Kings Park in Perth. It was a glorious day, the weather sunny and warm, the views over Perth waters and the high rise of the city making a spectacular backdrop. It was a perfect setting for discussing and writing haiku. The Spring flowers, the towering trees and the memorials of Remembrance all gave the poets plenty of opportunity for inspiration.

Haiku @ The Oaks, Canberra
Thursday, 10th October 2024
Many voices mingled beneath the trees on a sunny spring day, those of the numerous currawongs and magpies claiming dominance over those of human diners. Four of us met over lunch: Kathy Kituai, Marietta McGregor, Glenys Ferguson and Jan Dobb. Our thoughts were with missing friends, Hazel Hall and Greg Piko.

White Pebbles Haiku Group Spring Meeting
The White Pebbles Haiku group meets four times a year at the start of each season to celebrate the movement of the seasons and the writing of haiku in English in response. The Spring meeting was held on Saturday 14th September at the Pebbles’ regular meeting place – the beautiful Gosford/Edogawa Commemorative Japanese Gardens on the Central Coast of NSW.

Spring has arrived in Sydney, with cherry blossoms on full display last month at Auburn Botanical Gardens, where a small group of poets from all over the city gathered to read beside a shady billabong.

Haiku as a practice thrives on solitude. Time alone – going on a ginkō or doing a mundane task such as peeling vegetables, washing dishes or pulling weeds – allows us to pay attention to bodily sensations and our mind’s wanderings. Such solitary experiences often provide substance for our poems.

President’s greeting
It was great to see so many opportunities for poets to connect with each other and the wider community in the last month as International Haiku Poetry Day was marked in various ways around 17th April. In the Haiku Groups’ Zoom meeting hosted by AHS, thirty poems were read, one each composed by poets from five groups based in different parts of the country: Fringe Myrtles (Melbourne), Paperbark Haiku (Perth), Bindii Japanese Genre Poetry Group (Adelaide & online), Cloudcatchers (NSW North Coast) and Illawong Haiku Group (Sydney). Thanks to all the poets who contributed to the success of the gathering.
