Paperbark Haiku invites you to take part in our Spring Kambarang Ginko
We’re almost half way through Spring and into Kambarang (Noongar season), so the landscape is radiant with wildflowers and the days are slowly getting warmer. Time to celebrate and give birth to some new haiku. So join us on our ginko, or if you can’t do that, join us after for a Zoom meeting to share your new haiku from your personal ginko.

Paperbark Haiku WA, Zoom Winter Ginko
On a glorious winter’s day, 5th August, 2020, in Perth, Western Australia, I contemplated the healing power of the sun as it entered my study windows through thin vertical blinds. Outside, the succulents were busy showing off their light and shade, their colour and variation; inside, I was preparing for the two hour Paperbark Haiku Zoom Winter Ginko gathering.

As we move through winter here in Perth, I’m sure we’re all enjoying each moment, those chilly mornings, the glorious sunny days, the wintry, wild, stormy days, the welcomed rain, leaves tossed around by the winds and watching the seasonal changes around us. A perfect time to be in the moment! Or perhaps we’re already seeing the hints of Spring to come.

Paperbark Autumn Meeting
Paperbark Haiku promoted its “Autumn 2020 Ginko in isolation” followed by a Zoom meeting on Tuesday night 26th May, to share our freshly harvested haiku.
Paperbark’s Maureen Sexton hosted our virtual feast of haiku with esteemed haiku poets Brendon Kent (UK), Madhuri Pillai (Victoria), Myron Lysenko (Victoria), Coral Carter (South Australia), and from Western Australia, Rose van Son, Gail Willems, Melissa Moffat, Barry Sanbrook and Tash Adams contributing seasonal produce.

Such a pretty place – Guildford, WA is an important town in the Swan Valley with so much history. I was lucky to have grown up in the area and that makes a difference to how you see a place and its relevance to writing haiku because you know its background, its heritage, and its heritage become yours.

Yone Noguchi compares hokku to “a tiny star … carrying the whole sky at its back.” He compares an English poem to “a mansion with windows widely open, even the pictures of its drawing-room visible from the outside. It does not tempt me much to see the within.” He says, “simplicity and the power of suggestion offer a superior poetic form.”

One fine spring day…
On a fine spring day, warm with a cool breeze and blue skies sporting a few white clouds, five haiku enthusiasts from Paperbark Haiku: Melissa Moffat, Elizabeth Nicholls, Rose van Son, Barry Sanbrook and Maureen Sexton, met for a ginko and to discuss the intricacies and simplicities of haiku, in the Meeting Room at the Dome Café, Maylands, WA.
