Recent awards for Australian Haiku Poets

There have been a few international competition results come out recently in which Australians have fared well. Lyn Reeves was one of the winners of this year’s Haiku Calendar Competition, and Mark Miller, together with Lyn, was among the runners-up.  Mark Miller took out second prize in the 26th Mainichi Haiku Contest, in which Rob Scott also received an honorable mention. Well done Lyn, Mark and Rob!

Australian haiku poets also did well in the recently announced Haiku section results of the New Zealand Poetry Society International Competition. Gavin Austin and Owen Bullock each received ‘Highly commended’, while five poets were ‘Commended’ for their entries: Jan Dobb, Simon Hanson, Ron Moss, Lyn Reeves, Cynthia Rowe. Congratulations to all these fine poets!

Enchanted Garden Haiku

Editor Steliana Voicu has just released the third issue of this new online journal. Submissions for issue four are open from 1st to 15th September, while issue five submissions will be open in November. See the Submissions calendar page for more details, including the theme for upcoming issues.

2023 New Zealand Poetry Society International Poetry Competition

The 2023 New Zealand Poetry Society International Poetry Competition is open for four categories:
• Open Adult (18+ years)
• Open Haiku (18+ years)
• Open Junior (17 years and younger)
• Haiku Junior (17 years and younger)
The competition closes on May 31st, 2023, at midnight New Zealand time.

Gadigal Ginko No. 2 in Sydney

Saturday 20th May 2023, 2pm, Barangaroo Reserve

Convenor Leanne Mumford invites Sydney contemporary haiku poets of all levels of experience to participate in the next Gadigal Ginko from 2pm on Saturday 20th May at Barangaroo Reserve in the city. Report on the first Gadigal Ginko

23rd March 2023

Nine poets gathered at Sydney Park, St Peters, on a warm and sunny Thursday morning for the first ever Gadigal Ginko. Following brief introductions, we dispersed in different directions in search of haiku moments. Sydney park offered us a series of linked ponds, shady groves, open lawns, plenty of bird and insect-life, and even some autumn flowers. There were also many opportunities for dog- and people-watching, as well as plane-spotting. With rain forecast, we were fortunate that the good weather held for the whole time.
