Fringe Myrtles at Chamber Poets

Saturday 13th April, 2024, at Woodend, Victoria

In celebration of International Haiku Day, the FRINGE MYRTLES HAIKU GROUP will be the featured readers at CHAMBER POETS, a monthly spoken word event organised by Myron Lysenko since 2013. It takes place on the second Saturday of each month between 1pm- 4pm at the Woodend RSL (32 Anslow Street Woodend). The date for this haiku celebration/reading is 13th April. There will also be an OPEN SECTION and resident band BLACK FOREST SMOKE will perform haiku set to music. All welcome. Entry by donation $10/$5.

Next Gadigal Ginko in Sydney: 2pm, 16th April, 2024

The next Gadigal Ginko in Sydney – number 5 – has been organised to mark International Haiku Poetry Day on 17th April. It will take place on the afternoon of Tuesday 16th April, from 2pm, in The Domain, Sydney. Contemporary haiku poets of all levels of experience are invited to join the gathering. Fringe Myrtles Meeting March 2024

There was much chuckling, guffawing and general merriment at the first Fringe Myrtles meeting for 2024. The meeting was held on Sunday 17 March at our new home, the beautiful Atheneum Library, Melbourne’s only membership library, which celebrates its 185^th birthday this year.

Report on Bindii Meeting 23 March 2024

Steve Wigg, Julia Wakefield, Stella Damarjati, Lynette Arden, Jake Dennis and Ewan Rourke joined the Google Meet meeting, and apologies were received from Subha Goonaratne, Maureen Sexton and Kirsten Johnston. Most people sent their haiku in advance, which made it easier for us to critique them.

We workshopped our haiku and then arranged to have our next meeting on Sunday April 14 at 3pm, before the AHS meeting that takes place on International Haiku Poetry Day on April 17.

Submissions open for Catchment – Poetry of Place: second edition

The submission period for the second edition of Catchment – Poetry of Place will span from 21 March till 21 May 2024.

Poets resident in Australia are again most welcome to submit work showing a sense of location, either in tanka or longer forms, or both.

Sydney Launch of ‘under the same moon: Fourth Australian Haiku Anthology’

Sunday 14th April 2.30 – 4.30pm. Kirribilli Neighbourhood Centre, Kirribilli

We are delighted to invite you to begin the week of celebrations for International Haiku Day by coming to the Sydney launch of under the same moon on Sunday 14^th April at 2.30pm. The launch will take place in the Gallery, a heritage room with views across Sydney Harbour. Refreshments will be provided.

Haiku in Hobart

Hobart is experiencing a wave of haiku events just now, beginning with the launch of Under the Same Moon: Fourth Australian Haiku Anthology at Fuller’s Bookshop on 16^th February. The launch was held as part of the bookshop’s 104^th Anniversary. There are ten Tasmanian contributors to the anthology. Those poets who were present, Ross Coward, Lorraine Haig, Simon Hanson, Leanne Jaeger, Irene McGuire, Peter Macrow, Ron C. Moss and Lyn Reeves, read their work. Lyn, who emceed, read the haiku of those who couldn’t attend the event, (Jane Williams, Judith EP Johnson and Nathan Sydney). The inimitable Michael Fortescue, former double bass player of the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, and improviser par excellence collaborated with the readings with delightful musical interpretations of the words. It was a night of great enjoyment for all.
