In this latest journey around the sun the Autumn equinox has passed for us in The Land Down Under. How deeply ingrained are our notions of up & down and of north & south that we sometimes forget there is no up or down on a sphere spinning in space. North is no more up than is South and the maps and globes that suggest otherwise are somewhat misleading. Such notions have their origins in the northern hemisphere where they have been known to embellish the N on maps and compasses with extra significance. Even today some people will tell you with certainty that a compass points north seeming to forget that a compass needle has two points not one, and following the lines of the Earth’s magnetic field these point north-south or south-north if you prefer. Bowerbird Tanka Group meeting # 18

On 17th March 2018, fifteen poetry lovers were welcomed by Beverley George to her home in beautiful Pearl Beach. This was the first Bowerbird meeting of the year and the eighteenth in the series. Many delegates travel long distances, to be present at these meetings, to appreciate and be inspired on their tanka journey.
The morning opened with presentations from three members: Jo Tregellis, followed by Hazel Hall and M.L. Grace. Each had chosen a tanka by someone they had not met but whose tanka they had read and admired. Each shared their response to the poem and focused on the aspects that appealed to them. Red Kelpie Haiku Group #15, March 2018
There’ve been two RKHG meetings over the last several weeks, a very enjoyable, informal meeting with Santa Fe haiku poet, Sondra Byrne, and our scheduled autumn meeting.

On Sunday 25th February Robyn Cairns, Marisa Fazio, Lorin Ford, Jayashree Maniyil, Janet Howie and Madhuri Pillai were privileged to meet with Sondra in Melbourne’s Botanic Gardens. Here we are in the Rose Pavilion:
Mari Warabiny Autumn Ginko

On Saturday 10th March a group of haiku writers gathered at the First Edition Café for a ginko in the lush, urban Perth Cultural Centre. We were surrounded by the State Library of WA, the Art Gallery of WA, Perth Institute of Contemporary Art, the Big Screen, the Urban Orchard, the Native Wetlands, the Interactive Play Space and the WA Museum, currently being refurbished. It was a hot day of 31 degrees, but already leaves were falling and scattering, in typical autumn fashion.
Over coffee and muffins, we shared some of our favourite haiku, and why those particular haiku resonated with us. Then we parted to go on our individual walks to write haiku. Continue reading “Mari Warabiny Autumn Ginko”
White Pebbles Haiku Group Autumn 2018
The autumn meeting of the White Pebbles Haiku Group took place at Gosford / Edogawa Gardens on March 10th. Present were Marilyn Humbert, Gail Hennessy, Maire Glacken, Verna Rieschild, Kent Robinson, Beverley George, Colleen Keating, Rozanne Collins and Wendy Stringer. Apologies were received from Samantha Hyde and Anne Birt, both of whom were travelling. We look forward to seeing them at our winter meeting on June 16th.
As usual, we met at 10 for an informal half hour chat and coffee on the café patio, before commencing our ginko promptly at 10:30. We work from a pre-distributed handout which includes prompts and examples to get us comfortably started and soon we are scattered throughout the garden’s expanse individually writing what we are observing.
