The writer-friendly Hughenden Hotel at Woollahra was the venue on February 3rd, for the launch by David Terelinck of Wind through the Wheatfields: Tanka by Beverley George writing with Friends.
This is a book of response tanka, gently gathered over years, and featuring the poetry of Andre Surridge, David Terelinck, Dy Andreasen, Giselle Maya, Janice M Bostok, Julie Thorndyke, Kathy Kituai, Kirsty Karkow, Maria Steyn, Meredith Ferris, M L Grace and Owen Bullock. Illustrations are by Pim Sarti.
The event was attended by 60 people and included the launch by Dawn Bruce of Beverley’s tanka chapbook, This Pinging Hail, with cover illustrations by Tumi K Steyn.

Lorin Ford’s first collection of haiku, a wattle seedpod, will be launched on Friday, 25th July 2008 by Kris Hemensley, receiver of The Christopher Brennan Award for poetry, at Melbourne’s best-loved poetry bookshop, Collected Works.

Earlier this month, I had the pleasure of attending a book launch at the Hobart Bookshop of the ink brushed distance by Lyn Reeves, vice-president of the Australian Haiku Society, manager/owner of Pardalote Press and haiku editor for Famous Reporter. In this book, which features a cover design by Ron Moss, haiku are interspersed with free verse to pleasing effect. The book is published by Walleah Press PO Box 368 North Hobart Tasmania 7002.
I was also delighted to be guest of honour at an enjoyable lunch, hosted by Lyn and Andrew Reeves and to meet haiku poets from the talented Watersmeet Haiku Group, with whom I have corresponded for years, through Yellow Moon and Eucalypt.
Extended meanderings through the amazingly beautiful Botanical Gardens and the lively Salamanca Markets, together the near presence of ocean and mountains, made it obvious why these haiku poets never run out of inspiration.

Dangerously Poetic Press will be launching sand between the toes, a haiku journey through Byron Bay and beyond CD/book at the Byron Bay Writer’s Festival on Sunday the 29th of July at 1:45 pm. Dr. Jacqui Murray will do the honours. Poet, journalist, historian and broadcaster, she has been writing haiku for many years. In that time she has been an international haiku judge, co-ordinated the JAL World Childrens’ Haiku Contest in Australia and has been widely published. She is also a founding editor of the haiku magazine, Paper Wasp. About the cd/book, she has said, A lyrical reaffirmation of nature in haiku, music and organic sound to calm the senses and feed the soul.
