Report on the Haiku Workshop at Lobethal Woollen Mill: 5 March 2017

The workshop was presented by Julia Wakefield, who has provided the following report:

I was invited by Anne Griffiths to conduct a one hour workshop on the art of writing haiku at the h.ART Spoken words Exhibition at Lobethal Woollen Mill on March 5 2017.

This was followed by a reading by Bindii members: Maeve Archibald, Lynette Arden, Jill Gower and Belinda Broughton.

Blowing Up Balloons: Sydney and Yass book launches

Vanessa Proctor from Sydney and Gregory Piko from Yass have collaborated in writing a book of haiku that celebrate the joys of parenthood from the creation of a new life through to early childhood.

The book is titled Blowing Up Balloons: baby poems for parents and is published by Red Moon Press. Vanessa and Gregory will be launching Blowing Up Balloons (BUB) in both Sydney and Yass over the coming weeks with everyone invited to attend.

The Sydney launch will take place at 2pm on Saturday 25th March at The Children’s Bookshop, 6 Hannah Street, Beecroft.

The Yass launch will take place at 2pm the following Saturday, 1st April, at Tootsie’s café and gallery which can be found at 289 Comur Street, Yass.

Members’ News – February, 2017

Australian poets to enjoy haiku-based successes across the month of February include Earl Livings, Marietta McGregor and Simon Hanson.

Earl Livings has had one of his poems voted as being among the top three haiku published in Ireland’s Shamrock Haiku Journal during 2016.

Marietta McGregor’s work in haiku has been recognised within a Mann Library feature.

Marietta also gained an Honourable Mention in the Iris Little Haiku Contest conducted by the Three Rivers Haiku Association in Croatia, as did Simon Hanson.

Newly appointed as the Secretary for the Australian Haiku Society, Simon has likewise recently had a photo haiku selected for the NHK Haiku Masters series, where it has been incorporated into a TV / Internet broadcast program.

Haiku @ The Oaks, Canberra

Our group met again, under the spreading branches at The Oaks in Yarralumla, to enjoy coffee, conversation and each other’s company.

There was appreciation of Marietta McGregor’s wonderful haiku that have featured all month on the Mann Library’s Daily Haiku website, talk of the little things in life and how well they were captured by Issa, there was mention of wabi, reference to sabi and even some talk about topics that didn’t have to do with poetry at all (though they may have inspired a new poem or two). Haiku at the Spoken Word Exhibition by h.ART at The Lobethal Fringe Event

h.ART are pleased to announce their inaugural Fringe exhibition event at the exciting new emerging arts venue at the State Heritage Onkaparinga Woollen Mill in Lobethal from 4 -19 March, 2017.
The focus is on the power of text and visual language to create dialogue.

HAIKU DAY ON 5 MARCH

Commencing Sunday, 5 March from 1.00 – 3.00 pm a Haiku Workshop conducted by Julia Wakefield-Houghton Printmaker, Illustrator and Teacher, followed by Haiku readings by members of Haiku Bindi, Belinda Broughton, Lyn Arden, Jill Gower and Maeve Archibald.

A short introduction to the rules and how we can break them will be followed by a series of writing exercises. Hopefully a few original haiku will result! Julia is a member of the only SA poetry group dedicated to writing Japanese style poetry in English.

Participation in the Haiku Workshop is by gold coin donation.

Roberta Beary Visiting Australia
