Illawong Haiku Group Spring 2019 Ginko
We chose the Joseph Banks Native Plant Reserve at Kareela to hold our 2019 Spring Ginko after our pleasant experience there last Spring and it didn’t disappoint. It was a sparkling blue sky day with the native flora looking its best and exhibiting its adaptability to adjust to climatic changes. Beds of pink and white paper daisies and clumps of kangaroo paws in various colours greeted us at the car park.
In true old fashioned picnic style, our crowd of three began with a ‘cuppa’ from the thermos and some Baker’s Delight treats at a nearby picnic table suitably sited under the shade of the large eucalypts. To the sound of bird song and the sight of a pair of Rainbow Lorikeets dining on Gymea Lily we caught up on the various activities that have kept us busy since we last met. As the sunlight started to break through the shade we decided to relocate. As always a stroll through the natural environment created a calmness and presence in preparation to work through our recently created haiku. The melodious notes in the background provided by a Butcher Bird added to the ambience.

Spring Equinox Haiku String 2019
Thank you all who participated from near and far around the globe in the Australian Haiku Society Spring Equinox Haiku String. The theme of Discovery was a challenging one but once again the event has been quite popular, a bit of fun and produced a few gems. If you would like to revisit the String it can be accessed here.
The Haiku Foundation September Per Diem
The Haiku Foundation Per Diem for the month of September on the theme of Day Moon was selected by Madhuri Pillai. Introducing her chosen theme she writes:
“Since the beginning of time, the moon has always enamoured us with her luminous splendour, her tranquil visage as she serenely shimmers across the sky.
Yet in our busy daily schedule often we are unaware of her presence in the sky, either shyly dodging the clouds or brazenly challenging the sun, always unobtrusive.
I hope you will enjoy the collection of poems by poets who were inspired by the day moon.”

AHS Spring Equinox Haiku String 2019
The Australian Haiku Society welcomes contributions from haiku poets worldwide to the AHS Spring Equinox Haiku String 2019.
The String will remain open for contributions until Wednesday 25th September to accommodate international poets who may wish to take part.

Melbourne Writer’s Festival
The Australian Haiku Society (AHS) was invited to take part in The Melbourne Writer’s Festival this year. As a Victorian representative, I was contacted by Janel Yau, project manager at the Melbourne Immigration Museum who asked if we would be able to assist people write haiku and run an open stage reading featuring their work.

2019 AFL Grand Final Haiku Kukai
Calling haiku poets (and non-haiku poets alike) all over the world to sharpen your haiku lenses for the 2019 AFL Grand Final Haiku Kukai. This is the 8th annual running of this event in which haiku poets from all corners of the globe spend the duration of the AFL Grand Final writing haiku about the game. Your efforts will produce the only ‘live call’ of a major sports event in haiku anywhere in the world! (that we’re aware of!) So, wherever you are, whatever you’re doing, whoever you barrack for, send us some haiku of your experience of watching the game. Whether it be from inside the stadium, your couch, the local pub, the car, or even your bed, send us haiku throughout the game. This is a most unique grand final experience. Game starts 2.30pm (AEST) Saturday 29th September, but you are welcome to send haiku throughout the week in the build up to the game.

White Pebbles Haiku Group – Spring 2019
For our Spring Meeting at the Gosford/Edogawa Commemorative Gardens and Regional Gallery at East Gosford we were greeted by sunny skies and an occasional cool wind. The gardens were adorned with colourful azaleas and delicate fronds of mauve wisteria contrasting with the manicured green bushes that form an integral part of this tranquil area.
